Title: The As-Built Digital Twin: Creation and Benefits for Structural Carbon Composite Components

Description:

When carbon composites became the material of choice for certain aerospace primary structures, composites fabricators were able to provide relatively little information about the attributes of each component, as built: a few manual measurements of a sampling of ply orientations and edge locations, and buyoffs attesting to correct fabrication and absence of foreign objects and debris (FOD). Yet detailed knowledge of the actual laminate structure could help OEMs assess the performance life, the repairability of damage, and other critical aspects of these components as they age. Today, digital technology is able to generate an as-built digital twin of each component, including data from material management, automated fabrication, process control, and automatic inspection systems. This presentation will discuss the constituent data for an as-built digital twin, the application of Industry 4.0 technologies to create digital twins, and the benefits of providing an as-built digital twin to the OEM and end user.
